First: identify your type
Look in the mirror in natural light — no concealer. Notice the color, texture, and what makes them better or worse. Dark circles aren't one condition; they're a symptom of five very different internal patterns.
| What you see | When it's worse | Other signs | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brown, tan, or uneven pigment | Sun exposure, stress, hormone shifts | Dull skin tone, sighing, irritability | Brown / Pigment |
| Blue, purple, or visible vessels | Cold weather, fatigue, poor sleep | Cold hands and feet, low energy, congestion | Blue / Vascular |
| Deep shadow, hollow, gray or black | Aging, chronic overwork, after illness | Lower back ache, night sweats, early gray hair | Black / Structural |
| Reddish, itchy, or inflamed | Allergies, spicy food, alcohol, stress | Dry eyes, reactive skin, constipation | Red / Inflammatory |
| Puffy, swollen, yellowish bags | Morning, salty food, cold weather | Bloating, loose stools, heavy limbs, fatigue | Puffy / Fluid |
Many people have a mixed presentation — for example, Blue/Vascular with some Structural hollowing. Treat your dominant type first, then reassess after 4–6 weeks.
Brown / Pigment色素型
Brighten + ProtectThe Liver governs the smooth flow of Qi and stores Blood. When Liver Qi stagnates — from chronic stress, emotional suppression, or irregular sleep — circulation to the face becomes sluggish. This poor local flow activates melanin production around the delicate periorbital tissue, producing a brownish or tan discoloration. Blood deficiency (common in women and those who work long hours without adequate nutrition) further deprives the tissue of nourishment, dulling and darkening the skin over time.

Iron-oxide sunscreen is essential — it blocks the visible light that drives periorbital hyperpigmentation even on cloudy days. Apply every morning regardless of whether you go outdoors. Vitamin C brightens existing pigment; tranexamic acid reduces new melanin formation.
Picosecond lasers are preferred around the delicate eye area — shorter pulse duration means less heat damage. Always consult a dermatologist; undertreated brown circles can temporarily darken after aggressive IPL (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). Combination with topical tranexamic acid before and after significantly improves outcomes.
Blue / Purple / Vascular血瘀型
Move + DecongestQi is the force that moves Blood through the vessels. When Qi is deficient or blocked, Blood stagnates — it pools and becomes congested in the delicate capillary network beneath the thin periorbital skin, showing as a blue-purple shadow. Cold exposure, sedentary habits, poor circulation, and chronic fatigue all worsen Blood stasis. In TCM terms, this is not merely a cosmetic issue: it reflects cardiovascular and circulatory health at a systemic level.

Caffeine constricts blood vessels and temporarily reduces the pooled blood visibility. Vitamin K supports vessel wall integrity and reduces microbleeding that contributes to purple discoloration. Peptides strengthen the structural matrix that keeps blood vessels from showing through. Apply caffeine serum every morning, coolly (keep it in the fridge).
Vascular lasers target the hemoglobin in congested blood vessels directly. Nd:YAG 1064nm penetrates deeper and is safer for darker skin tones. PDL is effective but more aggressive. Multiple sessions (4–6) are typically needed. Between sessions, keep up daily caffeine application and lifestyle changes to maintain results.
Black / Gray / Structural腎虛型
Support + RebuildIn TCM, the Kidneys store Jing (精) — the body's foundational Essence that governs structure, aging, and regeneration. As Kidney Essence depletes through age, chronic overwork, illness, or constitutional weakness, the structural tissues of the face lose their support. The tear trough deepens, volume is lost, and the resulting hollow casts a shadow that appears dark gray or black. This is not a pigment issue — brightening products are largely ineffective here. The shadow is structural, not chemical.

Retinoids stimulate collagen production and cell turnover, rebuilding the structural matrix over time. Peptides signal fibroblasts to produce more collagen and elastin. Growth factor ampoules support tissue regeneration. Be patient — structural dark circles take 6–12 months of consistent use to improve. Brighteners and caffeine have minimal effect here.
Tear trough filler with hyaluronic acid is one of the most effective structural interventions — it literally fills the hollow that casts the shadow. Must be performed by an experienced injector (this area carries risk of vascular complications). Biostimulators like Sculptra or Radiesse stimulate your own collagen production over several months. PRP uses your own growth factors to regenerate tissue.
Red / Itchy / Inflammatory肺胃熱型
Repair + CoolIn TCM, the Lung governs the skin and opens to the exterior; Stomach Heat rises upward through its channel, which runs below the eye. When either organ accumulates Heat — from spicy food, alcohol, chronic stress, allergies, or environmental exposure — it manifests on the face and around the eyes as redness, irritation, and heat. This type often overlaps with allergic reactions, eczema, rosacea, or contact dermatitis. The goal is to clear Heat and repair the skin barrier, not to stimulate or exfoliate.

Avoid fragrance, alcohol, retinoids (during flares), AHA/BHA, vitamin C (acidic forms), and anything that stings. The priority is barrier repair, not actives. A simple fragrance-free ceramide cream applied twice daily is far more effective than any brightening serum for this type. Cold compresses reduce acute inflammation. Less is more.
Avoid most laser procedures during active inflammation — they will aggravate the heat. LED therapy with red or near-infrared wavelengths is safe and gently anti-inflammatory. Cooling and calming procedures only. Once inflammation is fully resolved and the skin barrier is strong, other treatments may be reconsidered.
Puffy / Yellow / Fluid脾虛痰濕型
Drain + DigestThe Spleen governs the transformation and transportation of fluids throughout the body. When Spleen Qi is weak — from cold food, irregular meals, worry, or constitutional factors — it fails to metabolize fluids efficiently. These fluids accumulate as Dampness in the lower spaces beneath the eyes, creating puffy, swollen bags. The yellowish tinge reflects the Spleen's color in TCM five-element theory. This type is not about pigment or blood vessels — it is about fluid metabolism and digestive function.

Morning depuffing is primarily a topical + physical intervention for this type. Keep your eye cream in the fridge — the cold constricts lymphatic vessels and temporarily reduces swelling. Learn the lymphatic drainage massage technique: light pressure from the inner corner outward, then down the sides of the face toward the neck. Do this for 2 minutes every morning. Sleeping with a slight pillow elevation (head slightly above chest) also helps fluid drain overnight.
For persistent fat pad prolapse contributing to permanent bags, HIFU or RF tightening can improve skin laxity and reduce the appearance of bags by firming the supporting tissue. Surgical blepharoplasty is the definitive treatment for structural fat herniation, but lifestyle and TCM changes should be exhausted first for functional fluid-type puffiness.
The 24-hour eye protocol
Regardless of your type, the time of day you apply skincare matters. Support the eyes from morning to night in three phases:
SPF 50+ with iron-oxide — every day
Iron-rich breakfast + vitamin C
Gentle lymphatic drainage (2 min)
Gentle eye acupressure (Jingming BL-1)
Type-matched herbal tea
Short walk to keep circulation moving
Black sesame + walnut snack (Kidney types)
Sleep before 11pm — non-negotiable
Elevate pillow slightly if prone to puffiness
The Liver is active between 1–3am, renewing Blood and clearing metabolic waste. The Gallbladder (its paired organ) governs 11pm–1am. Sleeping through this window is the single most important habit for all five dark circle types. No topical product compensates for chronic late sleep.
Healing from within starts with the pattern
Different dark circles need different internal support. A summary of the five food approaches by type — each bowl holds a different medicine.
| Type | TCM Action | Key foods | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brown | Soothe Liver Qi, nourish Blood | Rose buds, goji, spinach, blueberries | Alcohol, excessive caffeine, raw cold foods |
| Blue / Purple | Move Blood, build Qi | Astragalus broth, ginger, walnuts, salmon, onions | Cold foods, sedentary lifestyle, too much sitting |
| Black / Gray | Replenish Kidney Essence | Black sesame, walnuts, black beans, black fungus | Overwork, excessive exercise, late nights |
| Red / Itchy | Cool + Clear Heat | Chrysanthemum tea, cucumber, mint, pear, barley | Spicy food, alcohol, fried food, stress |
| Puffy / Yellow | Drain Dampness, strengthen Spleen | Yi Yi Ren congee, warm soup, fish, perilla | Ice-cold drinks, raw food, salty/processed food, late eating |
